Siobhan McCrohan has won a silver medal in the Lightweight Women’s Single Scull at this year’s World Rowing Cup III, ending today in Lucerne, Switzerland. She is the only woman to claim a medal for Ireland at the competition after several of her teammates missed out in competitive finals.
McCrohan, who last month missed out on a bronze at the European Rowing Championships by less than a third of a second, won her Friday heat with almost a ten-second lead and went into Saturday’s final with the second-fastest qualifying time.
That was the position she kept in the final, claiming silver in 7:36.85, four seconds ahead of Great Britain’s Olivia Bates. The event was won by American Sophia Luwis in 7:32.41.
On Sunday Zoe Hyde placed 5th in the B Final of Women’s Single Sculls in 7:39.83.
Natalie Long and Tara Hanlon placed 6th in the Women’s Pair A Final in 7:25.12. Australia’s Jessica Morrison and Annabelle McIntyre claimed gold in 7:00.84.
Margaret Cremen and Aoife Casey finished 5th in the Lightweight Women’s 2x, won by Imogen Grant and Emily Craig of Great Britain in 6:54.57. Cremen and Casey’s time was 7:02.07.
Finally, Fiona Murtagh, Aifric Keogh, Imogen Magner and Eimear Lambe finished 6th in the Women’s Four in 6:27.48. The Romanian team won in 6:18.51.
