Northern Irish Hannah Scott Wins At Henley

Bann Rowing Club’s Hannah Scott wins the Hambleden pair event at Henley Royal Regatta with Heidi Long of Marlow Rowing Club! The crew of 19 year old Hannah and 21 year old Heidi held a steady pace down the 2,112m course to beat their opposition by 3/4 of a length. Navigating the course proved to be a challenge for both crews, with Scott and Long having the better control which was crucial to their success. Rowan McKellar and Hattie Taylor had a difficult time steering, cutting close to the booms on several occasions.

The pair of Rowan McKellar and Harriet Taylor, both 24 years of age, have had great success together, with a recent bronze medal in the pair event at World Rowing Cup II and a silver medal competing in the women’s eight at World Rowing Cup I in Belgrade. McKellar and Taylor don’t appear to be in the pair event at the upcoming World Rowing Cup III in Lucerne, this weekend but we will be rooting for the two Irish crews of Emily Hegarty and Aifric Keogh, as well as Natalie Long and Tara Hanlon who are competing in the event.

All four athletes in the final have been rowing in the United States, with Hannah Scott currently studying at Princeton, Heidi Long with University of Virginia, Rowan McKellar at Cal Berkeley and Hattie Taylor with Syracuse University. Scott is originally from Coleraine, was previously rowing with Bann Rowing Club and has just finished her first year at Princeton.

Hannah Scott has had previous success sculling, now demonstrating her versatility with a prestigious win in the pair event. At 5’11” and just 19 years old, there are undoubtedly great things to come for Scott. At the 2017 Irish National Championships she won both the Junior 18A single scull and Intermediate single scull, as well as the Intermediate pair event with Katie Shirlow. They also competed in the Senior pair, finishing fourth with UCD’s Eimear Lambe and Aileen Crowley winning the event. Hannah Scott will not be in action at this years championships but pair partner, Katie Shirlow will be competing in the Intermediate single, Intermediate and Senior double with Alana O’Donovan.

The Hambleden 2- event was added to programme in 2017 and we look forward to seeing more exciting racing next year. Full results of Henley Royal Regatta 2018 can be found here.
