Ciara Mageean posted a season’s best time of 4:04.14 to finish second and claim silver in the 1500m race at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The 30-year old Portaferry Olympian finished 1.39 seconds behind Scotland’s Laura Muir, who stormed to the finish line to take home gold.

This is Mageean’s first ever Commonwealth title of her career at the third time of asking, having finished fifth in the Gold Coast four years ago. It represent’s her third championship medal of her career and adding to the 2016 European Championship bronze and 2019 European Indoor Championships bronze.
“The last Commonwealths, I knew I had the capability of winning a medal, I just wasn’t in the right shape at the right time. To win a medal at this Commonwealths and to bring it back to Northern Ireland… I’m a very proud Irishwoman, but I’m also very proud to be from the North,” said Mageean
Australia’s Abbey Caldwell took bronze in a time of 4:04.75, beating her compatriot Linden Hall into fourth place.

Mageean wins Team Northern Ireland’s second athletics medal of the event after Kate O’Connor also won silver in the heptathlon.
The silver medal is a welcome return to form for Mageean after a torrid time with injury. A calf tear hampered her performance at last years Olympics, while another calf issue ruled her out for the majority of this years indoor season.
