Ellen Walshe smashed a 28-year-old Irish record at the Leinster Championships on Saturday.

The 22-year-old Templeogue swimmer finished the 400m Individual Medley in 4:37.94, over a second faster than the previous record of 4:39.18, set by Michelle Smith at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics where she won gold in the event.

Walshe is already qualified for the Olympics in the 200m IM, which, as well as the 100m butterfly, she competed in at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Her new record was under the 400m IM Olympic Qualification time of 4:38.53, but she'll need to repeat it or come close at the Irish Open & Olympic trials later this month to compete in the event in Paris.
