The Ireland Women’s Hockey Team came away with a well-earned point in their penultimate outing in Rotterdam in the FIH Hockey Pro League, drawing 1-1 with Spain before the Spanish side secured the bonus point in the shootout.
Spain took the lead early in the opening quarter, but Ireland responded before the break through Hannah McLoughlin, who fired powerfully into the net from a penalty corner. Ireland created the better chances for long stretches, with Spanish goalkeeper Clara Perez producing a series of important saves to keep her side level. At the other end, Ayeisha McFerran was called upon late in the contest and delivered several crucial stops as the sides shared the points after a tense encounter.
Ireland were positive from the opening whistle, launching the ball deep into Spanish territory and immediately setting their press as they looked to test Spain’s composure early. It set the tone for a closely fought meeting in Rotterdam, with Ireland bringing energy and intent from the first exchanges.
The first circle entry of note came from Ireland, who won possession high and worked the ball to Jessica McMaster. She could not make a clean connection with her strike, allowing Perez to deal with the danger. Spain responded quickly, attacking down the other end and flashing the ball past the back post.
Moments later, Spain went close again when an effort ricocheted off the post and across goal. They reclaimed possession, recycled the attack, and worked the ball into position for a flick into the side netting to break the deadlock.
Ireland’s press continued to trouble Spain. McMaster won the ball back and fired at goal, but Perez was equal to the effort and kicked clear. With a minute remaining in the first quarter, Aisling Utri won Ireland a penalty corner and McLoughlin made no mistake, slapping a powerful effort into the back of the net to bring Ireland level.
Spain started the second quarter with more control and did well to break through the Irish press. McFerran was forced to race out of her goal and intervene to deny Martha Segue a clean effort. A second chance followed soon after, as Spain capitalised on an error at the back, but McFerran was again on hand to close down the danger.
Ireland worked the ball neatly in the minutes that followed. The first move ended with a blocked Niamh Carey effort, before an excellent one-two between Sarah Hawkshaw and Utri opened up space in the Spanish circle. The Ireland captain was dispossessed as she shaped to shoot, but the move reflected Ireland’s growing threat.
The Green Army continued to look dangerous, with Katie Larmour playing a crash ball into the circle that led to Ireland’s second penalty corner of the tie. McLoughlin again stepped forward, but Spain blocked her effort.
A penalty corner at the opposite end gave Spain their first major chance of the second quarter, but Sarah Torrans and Charlotte Beggs combined well to shut down the opportunity and keep Ireland level.
The third quarter became more controlled, with both sides pressing high and limiting time on the ball. Extended periods of possession were difficult to build, as Ireland and Spain continued to disrupt each other’s rhythm in midfield.
Ireland carved out one of the better chances late in the quarter through sharp thinking from Torrans, who made her way into the Spanish circle and found space to flick at goal. Perez was alert again, blocking the effort to keep the score at 1-1.
Ireland made an excellent start to the final quarter, with Beggs drawing a heavy stick challenge to win a penalty corner. Lisa Mulcahy flicked at goal from the set piece, forcing Perez to parry high and concede another corner. McLoughlin took on the follow-up effort, but her slap lifted high and Spain were awarded a free out.
Spain then enjoyed a period of sustained possession, asking repeated questions of the Irish defensive block. Ireland held firm through several waves of pressure before Spain eventually won their second penalty corner of the game.
McFerran produced a superb low save from the first effort, before excellent running from Michelle Carey blocked the second. Spain earned another opportunity from the sequence, but McFerran again stood strong to keep the game level.
With a little over two minutes remaining, Spain won another series of penalty corners and Ireland were forced to defend with composure and bravery. Torrans, as so often, was central to that resistance, helping Ireland survive the late pressure.
Ireland still had time to manufacture one final opportunity. Carey broke into the circle and found a Spanish foot to earn a penalty corner. Roisin Upton flicked towards Utri for the deflection, but her touch carried the ball wide.
The sides shared the points at the end of a tense tie, with Spain prevailing in the shootout to secure the bonus point.
Ireland will face Spain again tomorrow, June 18, at 16:00 Irish time in their final match of the Netherlands stage of the FIH Hockey Pro League.
