Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano's much-anticipated rematch has been postponed after 57-year-old Mike Tyson, the former undisputed heavyweight champion of the world who was due to fight influencer-turned-boxer Jake Paul in the co-main event of the night, suffered an ulcer flare-up.
The new date for the July 20 show will be announced by June 7, said Most Valuable Promotions (co-founded by Jake Paul) in a statement.
"The recommendation is for Mike Tyson to do minimal to light training over the next few weeks and then return to full training with no limitations. Both Mike and Jake are in agreement that it is only fair to ensure that both athletes have equal training time to prepare for this important match and are able to compete at the highest level," said MVP.
Taylor had looked forward to the "iconic" event, which was set to take place in front of 80,000 people in the Dallas Cowboys' Stadium in Texas, as well as being streamed live on Netflix.
“The last fight myself and Amanda fought, it was an epic fight. It was in front of 20,000 people in Madison Square Garden. It felt like the whole of Puerto Rico and Ireland were there on the stage during that night and now we get to do it again in front of 100,000 people. This is amazing for the sport live on Netflix. Just thank you so much to MVP for giving us this opportunity. This is absolutely iconic,” she had said at a press conference.
“I just got a phone call from my manager Brian a few weeks ago saying I was going to be on the same card as Mike Tyson and Jake Paul. And this is just a dream for me. I think last year my family had said to me, what do you want to do before I retire? Is there anything I want to achieve in a sport or anybody who I'd want to meet? And one of the things I said is I'd love to meet Mike Tyson and here you beside me, an icon of the sport, a legend of the sport. And this is just incredible."
Though the MVP statement did not specifically mention the Taylor v Serrano fight, it is assumed that it will be delayed to the new date for Paul v Tyson — should Tyson ever be cleared for the ring.
