Katie Taylor has vacated her IBF lightweight world title but kept her status as undisputed World super lightweight champion, indicating a potential trilogy fight with Chantelle Cameron.
The IBF has directed British fighters Caroline Dubois and Rhiannon Dixon to contest for the vacant lightweight championship. Both women are unbeaten in the professional ranks.
Cameron and Taylor have both expressed readiness for a third fight, with Taylor calling for it to take place at Croke Park. It was known that Taylor would not be able to retain both undisputed titles after her Nov. 25 win over Cameron, avenging her only professional loss of six months before, as WBO regulations forbid a champion from holding titles in two weight divisions. Each fight with Cameron took place at super lightweight.
Had my break from boxing to clear my head and recover from my first loss.@katie_t86 we both took each others 0, let’s get the trilogy on next .
I agreed the first fight in less than 48 hours no excuses
If you are anything like me you will not want to leave this at 1 -1 .— Chantelle Cameron (@chantellecam) December 9, 2023
It's also likely that Taylor was under pressure from the IBF to face Dubois to defend the lightweight title.
Her choice to vacate is a strong indication she intends to focus on a third fight with Cameron at the super lightweight level.
Taylor has faced the same issue before. She won her first super lightweight fight, a 2019 meeting with Christina Linardatou for the WBO title, but immediately vacated it in order to retain the WBO lightweight title.
