Aoife O’Rourke again crowned European Champion

Just a few hours after Shannon Sweeney won gold in the 50kg category, Aoife O’Rourke was crowned European Champion at 75kg yet again.

She defeated Russia’s Anastasiia Shamonova by split decision, with the judges 3-2; a 5-2 bout review confirmed her success.

O’Rourle was dominant in the first round, with all judges in her favor. The second was a closer contest, with O’Rourke getting ahead 20-18 with two judges but even with the others.

But the final round determined the victory for the Castlerea boxer, now seeming unstoppable with her third consecutive victory at the European Championships and with gold at the European Games last year in Poland, which qualified her for the Paris Olympics.

She’ll also be going home with a $15,000 prize as she turns her attention to the world’s biggest stage.
