“We need to play our best game ever” Vera Pauw on Republic of Irelands World Cup Qualifier against Scotland

The Republic of Ireland WNT will face Scotland in their World Cup play-off on Tuesday with KO at 8pm.

Manager Vera Pauw will be up against her former team and remarked that it will be no easy task.

“Physically they will be ready. The emotions, we will need to see how they handle that. On the other hand, they have played home now, they don’t travel, they stay there”

Scotland beat Austria 1-0 in extra time in Hampden Park. Abi Harrison was the goal scoring hero as she got her head to a Cuthbert corner in the 92nd minute.

“Scotland was by far the better team, and that was a bit surprising, because we’ve seen Austria playing against the very best top teams, magnificent games, but tonight it was all over the pitch for Scotland” said Pauw.

On what is next for Ireland as they prepare, Pauw said: “We are going to give our all and prepare in the best way ever, we’ll see if that is good enough”

“They [scouts] are going to report to the technical staff and we will discuss our game plan”

The Republic of Ireland squad travel to Glasgow on Monday ahead of their crucial showdown on Tuesday.

This will be the Girls in Green’s first ever World Cup play-off and the closest they have ever come to reaching a major tournament.

“We will need to play our best game ever” said Pauw.

We are hosting a watch party in The Bar, St Stephens Green on Tuesday October 11th, meeting at 7.30pm. Come along and show your support for our girls in green!
