Irish Team Arrive In Eugene For World Athletics Championships

The Irish team set to compete at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Oregon from July 15th – 24th arrived at the University of Oregon campus in Eugene early this morning (July 13th). Many of the team arrived in Eugene following a hugely beneficial camp at the McKenzie River Resort in Blue River. Athletes who are set to compete towards the later part of next week will acclimatise at the university from today.

The Irish team of 21 athletes will join the over 3,700 athletes and team officials from around the world who will be moving into their temporary home at the University of Oregon.

The World Athletics Championships began in 1983 in Helsinki, Finland, and have produced some of the greatest moments in Irish sporting history, including gold medal performances from Eamonn Coughlan (1983), Sonia O’Sullivan (1995), Olive Loughnane (2009), and Robert Heffernan (2013). This will be the first time that the World Athletics Championships have been hosted on U.S. soil, taking place at the reimagined Hayward Field at the University of Oregon which is expected to draw a global audience of 1 billion.
