It was a great night in Barcelona for Irish Olympian, Michelle Finn, who set a new Irish National record in the 2000m steeplechase.

Michelle Finn of Leevale AC, ran 6:16.46 beating her own old record of 6:16.67 to finish first ahead of Clara Viñaras and Lidia Campo in second and third, respectively.

Like many athletes its been a strange period for Finn who returned home to Cork after Covid-19 derailed her training with Melbourne Track Club in Australia.

Since her return however, the 2016 Rio Olympian has been in splendid form. At the Motonet GP in Espoo, Finn ran home to victory in 9:41.62 – the third fastest 3000m steeplechase in her career.

At the 148th Irish Life Health National Senior Track and Field Championships in August, Finn had a championship to remember adding 3000m steeplechase gold to her 5000m title. The Cork star also picked up fourth place in the 1500m event.

Also in Barcelona, Nadia Power continued to impress as she finished third in the mile with a time of 4:32.50. Power’s time puts her ninth on the all-time Irish list with Ciara Mageean the only Irish woman running faster in the last 11 years.

It’s been a brilliant season so far for Power who earlier this month broke Aoife Byrne’s 19-year old record to set a new U-23 Irish 800m record – this also put her sixth on the all-time Irish list.
