Come the start of September Galway WFC first team player Ruth Fahy steps away from the football boots and into the tender shoes that are to be filled of full time CEO at the club.
Becoming the first woman in the Women’s National League to take such a position, the qualified solicitor brings real world as well as vast playing experience to the table having donned the jerseys of Salthill Devon, UL, Castlebar Celtic, Wexford Youths and of course Galway over her career.

With the announcement having made waves across the domestic footballing scene in Ireland the 33-year-old is to steady the ship in her role as she yearns to introduce a player pathway and strategic project that will further the Tribeswomen outfit into the future.
Chairman of the club Stephen Moran referred to her appointment as an “exciting development” in their strive to reach “the next level.”
“We believe that Ruth can make a massive contribution” he said.
“We currently have teams in national competition at U17, U19 and senior level so this is a really interesting time. It is important that we continue to bring through players to a senior side that can compete seriously at national level.”

Fahy herself has “no qualms about the challenges” she expects to face but is fearless as to doing what is best for the association regardless of the opposition they may come into contact with.
“Galway WFC has always been a side that has had enormous potential and now the time is right to capitalise on that. This appointment is a hugely progressive step and an indication of the club’s ambitions both and off the pitch” she says.
“Women’s football continues to evolve at a rapid rate. As standards rise on the pitch, so too do demands off it.”
“In order for our players and coaching staff to compete at the top level, they need the right support structures in place. Massive efforts have been put in by club personnel over the past decade and we now need to elevate our club structures to the next level to truly reap the benefits of this work.”
“I have no qualms about the challenges that we will face as we work towards a new club vision. But I’m not afraid to do things differently where needs be.”
For now though the first challenge is to kick off her work at the beginning of next month and see what can be achieved for the Connacht side who currently sit 5th in the WNL table.
“I believe in the talent we have in Galway and know that, with the right systems and strategic plan in place, we can achieve something special with this club. I’m incredibly grateful to the board for this opportunity and excited to get started.”
