In a historic victory, the Ireland Under-20 Women triumphed over Scotland with a decisive 37-7 win in the sweltering heat of Parma. This win marks their first at this level, showcasing their skill and determination in the Six Nations Women’s Summer Series.
Niamh Briggs’ side, driven by an outstanding front row, dominated the game. Prop Sophie Barrett set the tone early, scoring in the sixth minute. Kate Flannery’s two penalties added to the lead, putting Ireland 13 points ahead before Scotland’s Lucia Scott managed a try just before halftime.

Despite injuries to Faith Oviawe and Kelly Burke, Ireland’s pack, led by captain Jane Neill, remained unstoppable. They secured four unanswered tries in a 21-minute blitz. Replacement Ăadaoin Murtagh kicked off the scoring from a lineout maul, followed by two quick tries from player-of-the-match Beth Buttimer. Hannah Wilson, set up by the impressive 18-year-old hooker Buttimer, sealed the win.
This inaugural competition provided invaluable international experience for both players and coaches, paving the way for Ireland’s emerging talents to progress through the ranks. All 28 players saw game-time, benchmarking themselves against international opponents.
The tournament allowed three Under-23 players per matchday, enabling Ireland to feature standout performers like Oviawe, Ruth Campbell, and Ivana Kiripati.
Skipper Neill made a strong impact with a fierce tackle on Merryn Gunderson, setting the tone for Ireland’s aggressive play.
