Irish World Cup players Sinead Farrelly and Marissa Sheva may have been teammates in the international tournament, but they are set to go head to head in the US National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL)

The 16th of September will see Farrelly and Sheva play against one another in a Gotham FC vs Washington Spirit match.

Sinaed Farrelly, who was born in Pennsylvania to an Irish father, began playing for New Jersey’s Gotham FC this year after a seven year break from football, last playing for the Boston Breakers in 2016.

On her return after a long hiatus from the sport, Farrelly previously stated, “I feel like I’m kind of living this completely different life, this impossible life, and it’s just crazy. It just feels like it’s opened up my horizons, like, there’s no real limitations.”

Marissa Sheva’s maternal grandparents come from county Tyrone and county Donegal respectively, thus making her eligible to represent Ireland. Sheva, who made her debut for the country in February of 2023 plays for the DC-based Washington Spirit.

These two, however, will not be the only World Cup counterparts participating in this game. World Cup champion, Ether Gonzalez of Spain was also signed to Gotham in August.
