Sophie O’Sullivan Shatters Irish National U23 3000m Record

Sophie O’Sullivan broke the Irish National U23 3000m last night at the World Athletics Continental Tour meet in Rovereto, Italy.

O’Sullivan’s second-place finish in an impressive time of 8.44.72 (behind Ethiopia’s Wubrist Aschal) knocks nearly two seconds off the previous record held by Sarah Healy since July of last year.

The University of Washington student also took down the 41-year-old 3000m School Record and went on to become No. 5 in the NCAA all-dates record list. O’Sullivan also now sits third on the Irish senior all-time list for the event behind Mary Cullen and her mother, Sonia.

The 21-year-old’s performance last night added another achievement to her remarkable season. Earlier this year, she went to No. 1 all-time in collegiate history in the 1000m (2:37.08) and No. 3 all-time at 1500m when she ran 4:02.15 at the World Championships in Budapest, running a personal best and securing Olympic qualification in the process.
