Garmin Rumoured To Be Under Ransomware Attack

Technology company Garmin thought to be under ransomware attack as app is down for almost 24 hours

Garmin users around the world have been affected by the Garmin Connect app outage. Rumoured to be a “ransomware attack” the app is not working on mobile or desktop for users.

Garmin have not officially confirmed the attack, stating “We are currently experiencing an outage that affects Garmin Connect, and as a result, the Garmin Connect website and mobile app are down at this time”.

When trying to connect a device to the app it is showing “Server Maintenance: Sorry we are down for maintenance. Check back shortly.” Initially Garmin had said four hours, but the app has been down for at least 18 hours, since yesterday evening.

It is suspected that WastedLocker is associated with the ransomware attack and that financial demands are often high. If it is a ransomware situation and not maintenance,  the Garmin Connect app could be a negative experience for customers. It has been sugggested that WastedLocker doesn’t steal personal data, which is reassuring for the large cohort of Garmin users.

While customers are displeased and impatient at not being able to sync their latest workout, there may be bigger problems at hand for Garmin. Customers are currently waiting for an update, hoping it is simply an elongated maintenance period.
