Yale New Haven Children's Hospital has launched the Female+ Athlete Program, Connecticut's first initiative dedicated to addressing the unique needs of adolescent female athletes.
This comprehensive program brings together a multidisciplinary team - including experts in orthopedic surgery, primary care sports medicine, adolescent medicine, psychology, and athletic training - to provide specialised care for girls and young women engaged in all sports.
Recognizing that female athletes are more susceptible to certain injuries - such as ACL tears, concussions, and stress fractures - the program emphasises injury prevention through personalised strength-building and education on optimal techniques. Additionally, it offers state-of-the-art treatment for existing injuries and support for issues like bone health, nutrition, Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S), sports-related endocrinology concerns, and menstrual issues related to sport.
With only 6% of Strength and Conditioning Research being based on women, it's great to see initiatives such as this one being set up.
