Emma Raducanu has defeated Serena Williams in straight sets, coming away with an impressive score of 6-4 6-0. While this was their first encounter on the courts it is also likely to be their last, making it a significant game for them both.
Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam champion, struggled to find rhythm, giving up 12 unforced errors and making only 11 winners. This was while Raducanu, the defending US Open champion, set a good pace early and came out of the game with her 12th win of the season.
In an on-court interview after the match, Raducanu applauded Williams and her career. She said “I think we all need to just honour Serena and her amazing career, I’m so grateful for the experience of being able to play her and for our careers to cross over. Everything that she’s achieved is so inspirational and it was a true honour to share the court with her.”

However, the work is far from done. Raducanu is due to meet the former world No.1, Victoria Azarenka, later today. Raducanu added, “It is a fast turnover tomorrow, and I probably have got 12 hours until I’m back on site. I’m playing another slam champion”.
The Western and Southern Open is proving to be a very exciting watch this season.
Pass the tissues ❤️
