Peamount Hit Eight, Shels Edge Victory & Treaty Win Back To Back

Gameweek five of the Women's National League (WNL) season saw all three home teams claim the maximum three points.
League leaders Shelbourne FC and current WNL champions Peamount United maintained their 100 per cent winning starts to the season while newcomers Treaty United celebrated their second victory on the bounce at home to fellow newcomers Bohemians.
The scheduled game between Cork City and DLR Waves was postponed due to precautionary action taken over a suspected member of the DLR Waves first-team, showing Covid-like symptoms. A new date for the fixture will be announced in due course.
Peamount United 8-0 Athlone Town
Peamount United took their goal-tally to nineteen for the season in just four games as the champions ruthlessly dispatched league debutants Athlone Town.
As has been a trend in their opening four games, the Peas got off to a blistering start. Play-maker, Eleanor Ryan Doyle, who bagged four goals in the game, broke the deadlock after two minutes with a guided close-range header from a free-kick.
It was the worst possible start for the young Athlone Town outfit who conceded a second goal eight minutes later as Aine O’Gorman picked up where she left off last week with another goal for Peamount. The Republic of Ireland international bagged her second of the game a few minutes later, her sixth goal of the season, with an overhead-kick putting Peamount firmly in the driving seat.
On the 40^th minute, Ryan Doyle grabbed her second of the game and made it 4-0 before half-time with another close-range header.
The onslaught continued in the second half as Peamount bombarded Niamh Coombs in the Athlone Town net.
Despite Coombs best-efforts to keep the score line down, it was impossible to stop 22-year-old Dubliner Ryan Doyle to make it 5-0 and then 6-0. Ryan Doyle who was named in the 2019 WNL Team Of The Season, grabbed her hat-trick as she cutely diverted Lauryn O’Callaghan’s low cross inside the near post. Ryan Doyle her fourth with what is becoming a trademark composed curling effort into the top corner.
The champions netted two more goals in the last fifteen minutes of the game as Dearbhaile Beirne and Louise Masterson wrapped up the victory.
A cruel lesson for Tommy Hewitt's Athlone against top quality opposition. That’s now four games, nineteen goals and none conceded for the reigning champions.

Shelbourne 2-1 Wexford Youths
A second-half header from Emily Whelan ensured Shelbourne came away with all three points and maintained their 100 per cent start to the season.
It was set-up to be a tasty affair as the FAI Women’s Cup holders faced off against this year’s league leaders.
It was Wexford who started the game brighter and went close to opening the scoring as Aisling Frawley dragged her effort past the left-hand side of the post.
Youths went close again after Ireland’s newest international call-up, Ellen Molloy charged down Pearl Slattery’s attempted clearance in her own box before the ball kindly broke for Vanessa Ogbonna who swivelled  but was not able to get any power in her strike and the shot was easily saved by Rachael Kelly in the Shelbourne net.
After a slow start, Shelbourne found their rhythm in midfield and were rewarded in the 13th minute. A lovely exchange down the right hand side set Ciara Grant free to whip in a cross off-balance. Falling away, Grant overhit the ball which led to the fortuitous opener as her cross floated over the Wexford keeper Ciamh Gray and rebounded off the post into the net.
It didn’t take long for Wexford to draw level as less than sixty seconds later they levelled proceedings. Aisling Frawley charged down a Shelbourne clearance before neatly sliding in Kylie Murphy’s late run and she calmly slotted the ball through Rachel Kelly’s legs to mark her 200th WNL appearance in style.
Moments before half-time, Wexford had a strong claim for a penalty waved away after it appeared Pearl Slattery bundled over Murphy on the penalty sport. The sense of injustice riled up the Youths and they almost took the lead from a corner just before half-time after Ellen Molloy’s overhead kick caused a scramble in the Shel’s box.
After both sides re-emerged for the second all-square, it was much of the same. Both midfields cancelling each other out with intelligent and intricate passing and finding it difficult to put a press on the opposition.
On the hour mark, Shels wrestled back the lead. Noelle Murray picked out Emily Whelan with a sensational deep cross from the left-hand side. The talented teenager Whelan, with plenty to do, guided a fantastic looping header past Gray to seal the win and open up her account for the season.
Wexford pushed and pushed for an equaliser but couldn’t find the breakthrough. They will rue their missed opportunities and will be disappointed not to have come away with a point.
Shels will celebrate their victory alongside the call ups to the Ireland Women’s National team for Jamie Finn, Isibeal Atkinson and Jessica Ziu.

Treaty United 2-1 Bohemians
Having recorded their first ever victory in the WNL away to DLR Waves last weekend, the next task for Treaty United was to back up the performance and secure a first ever victory on home soil.
On Friday, Treaty United confirmed they had been given the all clear to play after a Covid scare, Dave Rooney's team had a couple of early chances on goal before Maggie Duncliffe broke the deadlock on 26 minutes when the former Cork City player connected with a pass from Aoife Shine to fire in.
Bohs hit back just before the interval when Ali Maxwell's corner kick caused confusion inside the Treaty penalty area and midfielder Niamh Kenna managed to direct the ball into the back of the net.
Almost immediately after the restart, the hosts were back in front when Shine again acted as creator but it was Aoife Horgan who supplied the cool finish to secure back-to-back wins for the Limerick outfit.
It’s been a tough start for Bohemians as the divisions newest club have found it difficult to sustain consistency throughout individual games. As they continue to grow and progress this season, expect some better results.
