Lego has revealed a 2023 Women's World Cup set featuring several of the biggest names in women's football ahead of the Fifa Women's World Cup next month.
Along with half a soccer field, a goal, podium, trophy stand, tv cameras, and supporters, the set includes minifigures of Australia's Sam Kerr, the U.S.A.'s Megan Rapinoe, Japan's Yuki Nagasato, and Nigeria's Asisat Oshoala, with both Rapinoe and Oshoala recognisable by their iconic brightly-colored hair.
Both Rapinoe and Nagasato are World Cup Champions (doubly for Rapinoe, also an Olympic gold medal and Ballon d'Or winner). Nagasato is also the first woman to play for the first team of a Japanese men's club. Sam Kerr, on Australia's national team since she was 15 and captain since 2019, will captain the co-host nation's team at the World Cup. Oshoala has been named African Player of the Year five times and won the Ballon d'Or at the 2014 u20 World Cup.
The set, part of the Icons of Play line, is part of Lego's new "Play Unstoppable" campaign, which the brand has announced aims to "challenge stereotypes around play and creative building, and encourage girls to unlock the freedom they need to play without boundaries."
The campaign also includes a partnership with the U.S. Soccer Federation and Football Australia to provide opportunities for girls in soccer (Lego is also a sponsor of the Matildas).
“Play, both on and off the pitch, helps children explore who they are, build confidence and feel like part of a team. It’s one of the reasons why women’s football is one of the fastest growing sports globally, with crowd attendance records being shattered regularly and over 30 million girls now playing the game worldwide. But despite the talent of female players and the excitement of the game finally being recognized on the global stage, there are still many stereotypes that surround girls, their hobbies and the way they play that we need to break down. I hope that seeing women like me achieve their dreams inspires girls to believe they are unstoppable when they get to do the things they love," shared Sam Kerr.
Interest in women's soccer is growing exponentially, and increasing the recognition of players is key to keeping that growth, as well as inspiring new generations of players; it's exciting to see major sponsors get behind the game.
The set is available now on the Lego website for just under €100.
