As the final group stages for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup continue to wrap up this week with exciting performances, here are the results of Tuesday's, August 1, games in Group D and E.

Group E played first at 8 am Irish Standard Time (IST) with matches between the Netherlands v Vietnam and the United States v Portugal.

  2. United States

The United States, previous World Cup Champions who had originally thought be front runners this year, have been showing disappointing performances as they scraped by Group E into the round of 16 with a tie against Portugal. This is the first time since 2011 that the United States were not the first finisher in their World Cup Group.

Midfielder Rose Lavelle received her second yellow card of the tournament, which means she will be suspended for the round of 16. Yellow cards carry over from the group stage into the round of 16 and two yellow cards equal to a red card.

Portugal played a very competitive game, almost eliminating the United States in the second-half stoppage time, when Portugal's Ana Capeta's shot bounced off the post.

Some Americans are also upset with the team because players are not singing along to the National Anthem. This began at the World Cup opener against Vietnam and has continued at the game against Portugal. There has been no statement released as to why players are opting out of singing.

At the end of the round, the Netherland's was in first with seven points (win, tie, win), the United States had five points (win, tie, tie), Portugal with four points (loss, win, tie), and Vietnam with zero points (3 losses).

Group D began at 11 am IST with games between England v China and Denmark v Haiti.

Group D

England started off strong in their game against China with an early goal in the fourth minute. It was later followed up with five more goals in the rest of the game, finishing in a 6-1 win.

Lauren James had two sensational goals in the 41' and 65' minute, helping her team keep the lead.

A penalty for a handball in the box gave China a goal in the 57' minute, but they were unable to put anymore goals in the back of the net.

A penalty in the 21' minute gave Denmark an early lead over Haiti. In the 100th minute, Sanne Trogelsgaard Neilsen scored a goal, cementing Denmark's lead. Denmark defeated Haiti, sending them into the Round of 16 behind England.
