Saturday will see Cork City take on Peamount United in the Women’s FAI Cup final. Peamount United are chasing their first ever domestic double while Cork City are looking to carve their name into the trophy for the first time since 2017.
Peamount United are favourites for the clash, finishing 14 points ahead of Cork City in the Women’s National League. The two teams clashed twice in the league with the Pea’s running away clear 3-0 winners on both occasions.
It certainly is not a forgone conclusion however, with Peamount United losing their last two cup finals in a row. Cork have been mighty impressive in their cup run with top scorer Saoirse Noonan causing havoc to the opposition defence. Perhaps understandably when you look at the average age of the squad, Cork City have found it difficult to maintain consistency over the season however they have shown they can put it up to the best and on cup final day anything is possible.
It promises to be a fascinating clash with both sides basing their philosophy on possession. Peamount United edge things in terms of experience and with the likes of Aine O’Gorman, Karen Duggan and Niamh Reid-Burke – they certainly have been there and done that. Cork on the other hand have plenty of up and coming stars who will be looking to assert themselves on the grand stage.
The match will be shown live on RTÉ 2, with kick-off at 3.15pm
