Since Peamount United’s 5-0 trouncing of hot on their heals challengers Shelbourne, the title race seemed all but wrapped up. That was until this weekend’s action.
DLR Waves held the reigning champions to a scoreless draw in sensational fashion through a masterclass from Eve Badana, blowing open the competition at the top once again seeing as the Reds were triumphant over Bohemians in the north Dublin derby too.
Given that there is now only two points separating the teams, their respective fixtures this weekend become all the more vital.
Elsewhere Cork City swept Treaty aside on a historic day for The Rebels, while Galway United and Athlone Town played out a 1-1 tie at Eamonn Deacy Park.

Prior to the game many expected The Peas to be lifting the WNL trophy upon the final whistle on Saturday, but Waves and Badana had an alternative vision.
The Republic of Ireland international picked up the player of the match award for her stunning showcase in which she saved a 38 minute penalty from Tiegan Ruddy and acted as the last line of defense on many other occasions too.
Captain Áine O'Gorman and the formidable Stephanie Roche came close to breaking the deadlock multiple times, as did Nadine Clare up the other end for the Sky Blues.
Neither were successful in shattering the stalemate however but the scoreless match was a phenomenal display of goalkeeping talent nonetheless and was broadcast live on Tg4.

Cork City may not have been vying for the title but were seeking a accolade of another kind this weekend.
They set the WNL record attendance at Turner’s Cross with 1,007 fans passing through the gate and allowing for a fantastic atmosphere at the Munster derby.
The Rebels determined not to let those supporters go home disappointed took the lead just 12 minutes in when Sarah McKevitt won a penalty and it was converted by captain Becky Cassin.
A headed effort form Jenna Slattery evened things up on 36 minutes when she connected with a Oliva Gibson cross and the scoreboard remained at 1-1 heading into the break.
City went on to dominate the second 45 minutes of proceedings when McKevitt slipped things 2-1 in their favour off a freekick, with Laura Shine providing the two goal cushion later on.

Always a smashing encounter, Shels V Bohs saw four goals at the Oscar Traynor Centre on Saturday.
Jessica Ziu secured the first and last strikes on the scorecard for the Noel King managed outfit, setting them in good stead for the upcoming last game of the season and the approaching FAI cup final.
A long range strike from Lisa Murphy presented exactly what the Gypsies are capable of and ignited some hope amongst their side but it culminated to no avail as the threat of attack from Shels continued to run ragged.
Last year’s Player of the Month Jessie Stapleton knocked in a goal of her own to confirm what was already evident and saw The Reds retain the bragging rights.

With sixth spot still up for grabs between Bohs and Athlone, The Town were adamant to put on a good performance against the Tribeswomen in Galway.
Tommy Hewitt’s group did exactly that but only came away with a share of the spoils due to an unfortunate own goal occurrence.
There was a fantastic battle ranging between Savannah McCarthy and Athlone stalwarts Muireann Devaney, Roisin Molloy and Kellie Brennan, the later of whom was first to score with around 20 minutes passed.
The held that advantage until around 20 minutes before the end when a ball ricocheted off Chloe Flynn and into the back of her own net.

The final weekend
Next weekend is the final of the 2021 WNL series, with some serious positions to be decided upon as of yet.
Peas host Galway at PLR Park and are in need of a win, as are Shels who are to play a precursor to the FAI Cup final versus Wexford Youths.
Sixth place is obtainable for both squads between Athlone and Bohs, while DLR will aspire to continue their form when they play Treaty.
