Manchester United's star striker and Player of the Year Alessia Russo is leaving the team at the expiration of her contract at the end of June.

Russo tied with Leah Galton as United's top scorer last season, scoring 10 goals in 20 games.

The 24-year-old is thought likely to sign with Arsenal, after their world-record bid of £450,000 for her was rejected by United in January.

Russo rejected several contract offers from Manchester United, though she would've become the highest-paid player ever for the women's side. The team eventually agreed to match Arsenal's salary offer, but reportedly this was late in the process and frustration with the negotiations was a factor in Russo's decision to leave.

Other teams have also expressed interest in Russo, including American team Washington Spirt, which is second in the NWSL. Russo's representatives attended Washington's 2-1 victory over Angel City last week.

It wouldn't be the first time Russo has played in the States; between 2017 and 2019 she played for college team the North Carolina Tar Heels.

Spirit owner Michele Kang recently became majority-owner of Lyon Féminin in a bid to create a women-led multi-club soccer organisation. Russo is rumoured to be considering an offer from Lyon as well.

Russo reports to England's training camp June 19 ahead of the World Cup next month.
