Paralympics Ireland are delighted to announce a new research project in partnership with the University of Limerick which aims to investigate the experience of athletes and coaches within Paralympic pathways in Ireland.

The project aims to explore the experiences of athletes and coaches currently involved in the Para pathway in Ireland to understand what makes a positive developmental experience and improves recruitment, retention, and the overall sporting environment. By focusing on the perspectives of those involved, the research hopes to identify factors that contribute to both positive and negative experiences, including barriers, challenges, and opportunities within the pathway. The goal is to use these insights to develop strategies that create a more inclusive, supportive, and effective environment for Para athletes and coaches.
Paralympics Ireland was awarded funding to conduct this research from Rethink Ireland on behalf of the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth. Rethink Ireland is a social innovation fund that supports the most innovative non-profit organisations working in communities across the country.
The research group are looking for a Research Assistant to join their team for the duration of this project. You can see full job description here.
Speaking about the partnership Paralympics Ireland Pathway Lead, Brian Hughes said: “Paralympics Ireland is delighted to partner with the University of Limerick on this exciting research project. Our aim is to gain deeper insights into the journey of para-athletes and coaches within the Paralympic pathway in Ireland. By understanding their lived experiences, challenges, and what contributes to a positive development experience, we aim to enhance our support systems. This collaboration will provide invaluable insights to shape future practice and strategy, empowering the next generation of Paralympic athletes in Ireland.”
Sean Healy, Associate Professor of Physical Activity and Sport Participation, Policy and Practice said: “The launch of this project marks a critical milestone in Paralympics Ireland’s ambition to maximize the participation, wellbeing, and success of all Para athletes. This initiative will ensure that future practices and strategies are evidence-based, driven by the voices of athletes and coaches. The research team from the Department of Physical Education and Sports Science at the University of Limerick is honoured to collaborate with Paralympics Ireland on this venture."
