Experienced Irish defender Megan Campbell has vowed to try and get her new club “back to where it belongs” after penning a deal with The Reds yesterday.

Campbell becomes the latest Irish player to join the contingent at the Merseyside club, after Leanne Kiernan announced her move from West Ham earlier in the week.

Campbell brings with her a wealth of experience, joining after five seasons at Manchester City, wherein she won a domestic treble with the side.

The Drogheda native hopes to aid in The Red’s quest to return to the FA Women’s Super League, having spent one season outside the top tier.

Speaking following the signing she said:

““I’ve played and trained with a lot of successful players from different cultures, Olympic medal winners, World Cup winners, European winners, so I’ve been around it and seen what it takes to get to the top and stay at the top so I hope I can help the club get promoted and get it back to where it belongs.

“I know the girls were disappointed not to get promotion last year so I’m sure they will have fire in their bellies and be ready to push on.”

The 27 year old plied her trade in the USA prior to her Manchester City days, having obtained a scholarship to the University of Florida.

Campbell is well-known for her danger from throw-ins from where she has accumulated a bag full of assists down through her career and she will hope to bring such threats to her new chapter on The Merseyside.

Liverpool Women’s boss Matt Beard feels the addition of Campbell to the squad adds some vital experience to the outfit.

““Meg offers a bit of versatility as she can play centre-back or left-back,” said Beard of the club’s third signing of the summer.

“She’s a fantastic footballer who has been a bit unlucky with injuries over the last year or so and I think it just fits for us and it fits for her.

“It’s another player who knows how to win things and has been involved in a club that is challenging. Her experience is going to be very valuable for us this campaign.”

The former Raheny United player will be relishing a fresh start after working her way back from an unfortunate ACL injury during her time at City.

Campbell, Kiernan and Niamh Fahey now make up a strong Irish contingent at Liverpool.
