Mageean Runs Season’s Best Ahead Of Olympic Games

Ciara Mageean recorded a season’s best of 4.02.48 in the 1500m finishing fifth in a world class field at the Monaco Diamond League. Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon and the Netherland’s Sifan Hassan finished first and second respectively, with defending Olympic champion, Kipyegon, running a 3:51.07 – the fourth fastest time in history.

Portaferry Mageean went into the race ranked 11th overall and showed real promising ahead of Tokyo with her fourth fastest time ever in the 1500m.

Mageean’s previous previous season’s best sat at 4:04.32, which was set at the Florence Diamond League. The race was paced to world record time, with Mageean remaining patient and controlling her race before kicking in the last lap to move up in the field from seventh to fifth place.

Mageean’s time also means she has achieved the automatic qualification (4:04.20) for the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Oregon.

Mageean is set to compete in her second Olympic Games in Tokyo.
