Leona Maguire is one step closer to qualifying for the 2019 Ladies European Tour, after an impressive performance at Amelkis Golf Club in Marrakesh, Morocco.
Competing against 70 players from 24 different countries, the former amateur world number one, secured a second place finish, six strokes behind Sweden’s Linnea Strom, and four shots clear of third-place finishers Diksha Dagar of India and Austrian Nadine Dreher.
Maguire recorded a fantastic 17-under par and will now advance to the final stage of the Ladies European Tour qualification process. The Cavan golfer will compete against 115 players from 31 different countries, from this Sunday, to secure one of 25 European Tour cards on offer.
The former Duke University star was composed and secure all week and recorded a final round 67 to record her lowest ever 72-hole score of her life. Maguire was overjoyed with her performance and spoke of her delight.
"It's the lowest total I've had for four rounds ever gives me good confidence and momentum heading into finals.”
It was so nearly double celebration for the Maguire twins, as Lisa Maguire narrowly missed out on the next stages after three bogeys in her final five holes. With +3 being the qualifying mark, Lisa Maguire ended up two shots outside of the qualifying mark. All players will play each course twice before a final fifth round.
The twins, hold the record as the youngest golfers to participate in an Ladies European Tour event, having competed at the 2007 Northern Ireland Ladies Open when they were just 12 years old.
Leona Maguire, has already secured a Symetra Tour card for next season, but she will now line out from December 16-20, over two courses, Amelkis Golf Club and Palm Golf Ourika with the hope of securing her place on the Ladies European Tour.
Two weeks ago, Maguire capped off her maiden Ladies European Tour event as a professional, with a brilliant tied for 18th finish. It was a fine debut at the Andalucia Open de Espana, as she continues to see her stock rise.
