Inter-county players from the Women's Gaelic Players Association and the Gaelic Players Association voted overwhelmingly to combine the two associations into one 4,000-member players’ association.
The votes saw 96% of WGPA delegates voting in favour while 100% of GPA delegates did so too. The voting took place at separate Extraordinary General Meetings (EGMs) on Monday night.
A new National Executive Committee will be elected at the 2021 Annual General Meeting.
Recently, the Women's Gaelic Players Association called for equality in funding following the release of its 'Levelling the Field' report. A survey of 534 players found that 93% of inter-county players receive no travel expenses at all, with the cost of fuel averaging €55 per week. This is in stark contrast to the 50 cent per mile for male players agreed between the GAA and GPA
Speaking to RTÉ’s Morning Ireland from Perth, Cora Staunton called it a “monumental day”.
"It's hugely significant and monumental day for both associations. With the overwhelming vote, the players believe strongly in equality and looking for one association. The one organisation... we always say we are stronger together. With over 4,000 members, I think there will be a stronger voice,” said Staunton.
