Irish divers, Clare Cryan, Tanya Watson and Ciara McGing were impressive as they got the 2020 International season underway in Madrid over the weekend.
Divers from across the world were competing in the three-day FINA Diving Grand Prix in the Spanish Capital as they gear up for the Tokyo 2020 qualifying competition, the FINA Diving World Cup, in Tokyo in April.
Clare Cryan was the first of the Irish competitors in action when she competed in the 3M preliminaries on Friday. Cryan progressed comfortably from that prelim with 255.05 points to the first semi-final. A 5th place in that semi-final, however, saw her edged out of the Final.
Tanya Watson and Ciara McGing were the final divers in action for Ireland on the Platform. Watson, who set a new Irish Record in the event in January, had a strong showing and progressed in 7th place to the semi-final with 254.90 points, while McGing was outside the semi-final places with 205.20.
In the semi-final, Watson was impressive with 263.40 and a 4th place finish, just outside the top three who progressed to the final.
The divers continue on to the second round of the FINA Grand Prix circuit this weekend as they travel to Rostock, Germany.
