Double World Road Racing champions, Katie-George Dunlevy and Eve McCrystal, will lead a 13-person para cycling team at the 2019 Para-Cycling Track World Championships, in the Netherlands.

The tandem cyclists are the current Road Racing champions, having defending both their the Time Trial and Women’s B Tandem Road Race titles at the 2018 Para-cycling Road World Championships in Italy.

With Tokyo 2020 on the horizon, the pair will seek to seek to improve on their track record and also secure Paralympic Games qualification.

McCrystal said: “We have two bronze medals at the Track World Championships, and I’m not saying that bronze isn’t good enough, but I would love to get higher and I know we have the strength and ability to do it.”

The 2016 Paralympic gold medallists will compete in the kilometre and sprint events, as well as the new mixed team kilometre relay with Martin Gordon and pilot Eamon Byrne. The new mixed team kilometre relay will see both teams out on the track for four laps.  Dunlevy and McCrystal will take the first two laps whilst the Gordon and Byrne will take the final two laps. The fastest two laps from both teams will be counted towards the overall score.

The Irish team have undergone a gruelling 5-week training camp in Majorca to ensure they are in the best possible shape to perform at their best. McCrystal is confident in their preparations:

“We are as prepared as well we can be, we’re ready to get a medal, I never go for anything less”

Piloting for Katie-George Dunlevy since 2013, the pair enjoyed major success and if they perform at their potential, Ireland will no doubt be celebrating another cycling medal at this year’s Track World Championships.
