Ireland’s Jenny Egan secured a silver medal finish at the K1 Women 5000m event of the Canoeing World Championships in Copenhagen on Sunday.
The triumph her second medal of the season, the race was heavily contested throughout the 23 minute course with just a 1.96 second split between the top three competitors.
Egan was pipped to top spot by Hungary’s Emese Kohlami but placed ahead of Britain’s Lizzie Broughton in the sprint finale.
Earlier in the competition Egan was left short changed after a disappointing 500m outing in which she was knocked out at the semi-final stage but will have been happy to regain some confidence in the thick of the championship calendar.
Speaking with Off The Ball yesterday she commented that she is “still in Denmark in preparation for the marathon world championships which are in Romania” and upcoming this time next week.
“It’s been a really exciting time” she says.
“Thankfully all my training and hard work throughout the last year and a half and through lockdown paid off on Sunday and to get back on that senior world Championship podium for Ireland was a dream come through.”
