When we see professional athletes at work, they often make winning look easy. But it’s important to remember that even top athletes face challenges along the way. Finding the resilience to battle through is the key to success and is different for everyone. Prioritising training, nutrition, hours of gym work all play a part, but sometimes it’s that inner strength, the support of family, and the mental fortitude that is just as strong as his physical strength.
Often success is more than muscle deep.
From the outside you would think Amy O’Connor has had it all her own way. The four-time Senior All-Ireland champion is one of the stars of the show in camogie but O’Connor has faced challenges along her journey, but importantly, she has persevered through it all. Everyone handles adversity differently and O’Connor, she chooses to get the head down and train relentlessly to become the best version of herself possible.
Having spent much of her youth donning the green jersey for Ireland’s U19 soccer team - O’Connor was part of the U19 team with the likes of Katie McCabe, Sarah Rowe and Chloe Mustaki that reached the semi-finals of the Uefa European Championships. Despite her obvious talent with the ball at her feet, O’Connor opted to pursue her love for camogie instead. Four Senior All-Ireland’s later, it’s safe to say the hard work and sacrifice has paid off.
Having represented her country and county in two different sports, O’Connor knows a thing or two about the sacrifices you have to make to be successful at your chosen sport.
Watch and and see why for Amy, becoming a successful athlete is More Than Muscle Deep
