Cavan flyweight Ceire Smith advanced to the last 16 at the Women's Boxing World Championships in Siberia, after by beating Australia's Taylah Robertson with a unanimous decision .
Taylah Robertson is a Commonwealth Games bronze medallist however Smith dispatached of her with ease. The Irish champion fired off the cleaner shots with heavy punches inflicted on the Australian.
Three of the five judges gave Smith all three rounds as she clinched a 30-27, 30-27, 30-27, 29-28, 29-28 victory.
Victory for smith has secured her a place in the last 16 where she will fight North Korea's number one seed Mi Choi Pang for a place in the quarter-finals next Tuesday. The Phyongan native is the current World and Asian champ.
Meanwhile Cork welterweight Christina Desmond has also advanced to the last 16 after defeating England’s Commonwealth champion Sandy Ryan in her opening fight.
The southpaw overcame a point deduction to take victory on a 4-1 split decision.
Desmond will now face the number five seed, Myriam De Silva Rondeau from Canada, in a last sixteen fight next Wednesday. Victory will see Desmond one more fight away from a guaranteed medal.
Belfast fighter and number five seed Michaela Walsh, will open her account at the world championships this Saturday after receiving a bye. Walsh faces Carmara Fatoumata of Mali for a place in the last 16.
On Sunday, Amy Broadhurst steps into the ring for the first time at these Championships where she will fight Germany’s Maya Kleinhans.
