Ireland’s Amy Broadhurst and Christina Desmond have both progressed into the last eight of their respective weight-divisions after earning victories at the Women’s Boxing World Championships in Russia. The pair are now one win away from a guaranteed bronze medal at these Championships.
Amy Broadhurst was a quarterfinalist in the 64kg division last year and has matched her achievement this time round in the lightweight dvision. The Dundalk fighter earned a 30-27, 29-28, 29-28, 29-28, 29-28 unanimous decision over Aneta Rygielska of Poland.

The southpaw was full value for her victory, aggressively landing heavy shots to the body of Rygieslka. Broadhurst showed her class with lovely combinations throughout the fight and showed no signs easing up as she dominated proceedings throughout.
The Irish European U22 Champion will now face her toughest test to date at the Championships, as she prepares for a showdown with the number one seed Mira Potkonen, of Finland.
Potkonen is the current European champion and at the European Championships in Madrid last August, defeated Broadhurst in the semi-finals. The Finn is infamous for beating Katie Taylor at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games – leaving Taylor with bronze.
Later that day, Cork welterweight Christina Desmond beat Canada’s Myriam Da Silva with an impressive 30-26, 30-37,30-27,30-27, 29-28 unanimous decision victory.
The welterweight found herself in a meaty battle with heavy shots being landed by both fighers but Desmond managed to wrestle the initiative and found herself landing cleaner shots. Desmond was awarded the first two rounds and the Canadian edged out the final round but it was Desmond who held her arms aloft in victory at the end of the fight.
Next up for Desmond is a showdown with Turkey's Busenaz Surmeneli. Both Desmond and Broadhurst will fight for bronze on Thursday.
