Amy Broadhurst made it a clean sweep for Ireland at the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship, as she became the fourth Irish boxer to advance to the last 16 at the Worlds in Ulan-Ude, Russia.
The Dundalk lightweight, who was a quarterfinalist in the 64kg division last year, won on unanimous decision victory over German opponent Maya Kleinhans in her opening bout.
In what was a tight contest, Broadhurst’s tactical nous and ability to land cleaner shots on the inside saw her take the decision with final scores of 30-27,29-28,29-28,29-28,29-28 to Broadhurst.
The Irish European U22 Champion, who is looking to claim the lightweight title which Kellie Harrington won last year, will meet Poland’s former World Youth champion Aneta Rygielska on Wednesday for a place in the quarter-finals.

Victory for Broadhurst makes her the fourth Irish boxer through to the last 16 following victories for Michaela Walsh (featherweight), Ceire Smith (flyweight), and Christina Desmond (welterweight).
Michaela Walsh has booked her place in the last-16 of the featherweight division, after a convincing victory against Mali’s Carmara Fatoumata.
Walsh defeated Mali’s Carmara Fatoumata via unanimous decision, 30-25,30-25,30-25,30-25,30-25. The severity of the scorecard emphasised the one-sided nature of the fight. Fataomata, was given a standing count in the third round after Walsh landed a stiff right to daze the fighter.
