Just incase you haven't heard, the first ever European Championships begins today, August 2nd in Glasgow. The inaugural championships, brings together cycling, gymnastics, rowing, swimming, golf, triathlon and athletics for what is essentially a ‘Mini-European-Olympics’.
Glasgow will host the cycling, gymnastics, rowing, swimming, golf and triathlon from today until August 12th. The athletics will simultaneously take place in Berlin from the 6th - 12th August. The biggest names in the respective sports will be competing with more than 4,500 athletes expected to compete for 188 gold medals.
The events will be shown live, with RTE and BBC providing daily coverage. It is expected that these European Championships will take place every four years and become one of the highlights of the sporting calendar. With over 250,000 spectators expected in total, Glasgow 2018 will be an exciting prospect for the athletes.
Ireland are well represented in all the sports and will be looking to produce on the international stage. We have compiled the following list which details the Irish female athletes competing in the European Championships and when you can expect to catch them in action.
Rowing
The rowing runs over four days, from today 2 - 5th August and will showcase some of the best European rowers.
Ireland will be represented by Denise Walsh and Aoife Casey in the Lightweight Women’s Double Sculls. Their heat takes place today at 12:34 where they are up against Italy, Austria, Norway, Switzerland and Poland.
The duo row with Skibbereen and won the women’s senior double sculls at the 2018 Irish Rowing Championships in July.

Cycling
Cycling Ireland have sent a strong team in the track and road events. The track events take place from today until the 7th August, while the road events take place on the 5th, 8th and 12th of August.
Lydia Boylan, Lydia Gurley and Shannon McCurley will compete in the Madison relay race on the track. They will be in action on Tuesday, 7th August at 10:45-14:30.
Imogen Cotter, Mia Griffin, Hillary Hughes, Kelly Murphy, Alice Sharpe, and Orla Walsh will compete in the team pursuit. Qualifying begins this evening from 18:45 - 20:30. The final takes place tomorrow, 3rd August from 14:00 - 17:00.
Eileen Burns & Kelly Murphy compete in the time trials road race on the 8th August from 08:45 - 11:45.

Gymnastics
Gymnastics takes place today until the final day of the championships. Gymnastics Ireland have sent a junior and senior squad to compete in the Artistic Gymnastics category.
Meaghan Smith has been selected to compete at the Senior Women's Artistic Gymnastics. The qualifier takes place today from 09:45 - 21:00.
Ireland have sent Emma Slevin, Jane Heffernan, Kate Molloy and Blathnaid Higgins who make up the junior squad. They will compete tomorrow, Friday 3rd from 09:45 - 22:15.

Swimming and Diving
The swimming takes place from 3rd – 9th, whilst the diving takes place from 6th - 12th.
Niamh Kilgallen will be competing in the 200m individual medley. The semi-finals take place on Tuesday, 7th August from 16:15 - 18:45.
On Saturday 4th August, Mona McSharry will compete in the 100m breaststroke between 16:45 - 19:15.
Tanya Watson is the only female representative for Ireland in the diving. She will compete in the 10m platform dive. This will commence on Wednesday 8th from 09:15 - 11:15.

Triathlon
Laura Wylie is the only female competitor for Ireland in the Elite Women’s Triathlon. This will take place at Strathclyde Country Park from 13:15 - 16:30 on Thursday, 9th August.
