Reigning 400m hurdle Olympic champion, world champion, and world record holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone announced Friday that she is withdrawing from the World Athletics Championships, which start next week in Budapest.
"I am sad to share that I must withdraw from this year's World Championships in Budapest," the American shared on social media. "After consulting with my doctors and coaches, I need to take care of a minor knee issue so that I can be fully healthy for next year's Paris Olympics. I look forward to seeing everyone back on the track soon."
The 24-year-old has been focusing on the 400m flat this season, running a world lead last month (48.74) at the US Championships. She also withdrew from her last meet three weeks ago over knee issues.
Shaunae Miller-Uibo of the Bahamas is looking to defend her world title in the event, just 4 months after childbirth.
McLaughlin-Levrone is replaced by Lynna Irby-Jackson, who was already scheduled to compete for the US in the 4x400 relays.
