Ciara Mageean has been forced to withdraw from the Irish team set to compete at the European Cross Country Championships in Italy on December 11th.
Although disappointed, the Commonwealth Games 1500m silver medallist and her team have made the decision to withdraw from the event in order to recover from a recent illness and she will not travel to Turin.
Eilish Flanagan (Finn Valley AC) will now join sister Roisin on the senior women’s team as Ciara’s replacement. Eilish and Roisin will join an experienced senior women’s team which also includes Michelle Finn, Ann Marie McGlynn, Mary Mulhare, and Aoibhe Richardson.

It has been an incredible season for the City of Lisburn star, winning Silver at the European Championships in Munich, Achieving victory at the Diamond League and carving more than two seconds off Irish Legend Sonia O’Sullivan’s Irish 1500m record of 3:58.85. The Portaferry athelete also came in second in the Irish Senior Cross Country (running the last lap with one shoe!), to name but a few.

Although a big loss to the Irish squad the team still includes experienced and quality runners as they look to improve on last year’s agonising fourth-placed finish.
