It was another brilliant performance for Ciara Mageean as she broke her own national 1500m record yet again at the Diamond League meeting in Brussels Friday night.

Mageean ran 3:55.87 — the 24th fastest 1500m ever — to finish in second behind Scotland's Laura Muir (3:55.34), knocking nearly a second off her previous national record set at the Word Championships last month in Budapest, when she finished in fourth. Friday's record would've earned her a bronze in that race.

The City of Lisburn AC athlete and Portaferry native finished ahead of perennial rival Muir at those championships but had to settle for second in Brussels despite following Muir when she stretched clear of the group 300 meters from the finish.

Nelly Chepchirchir of Kenya, also finishing out the best season of her career so far, claimed third in 3:56.93. The first nine were all over the finish line with sub-four times.

Meanwhile Jamaican sprinter Shericka Jackson just barely missed the women's 200m World Record, running 21.48, the fourth fastest of all time. Florence Griffith Joyner's record of 21.48 has stood since 1988.

At a separate meet Sophie O'Sullivan improved her 800m personal best from 2:06.05 to 2:01.43.
