Donore Harriers: 130 Years at the Heart of Irish Athletics

Donore Harriers has been a cornerstone of Irish athletics since its foundation in 1893. From humble beginnings on South Circular Road to its current home in Chapelizod, the club has produced a steady stream of national champions, international representatives and thirteen Olympians.

A newly released book, The Story of Donore Harriers, written by lifelong members Maurice Ahern and Pat Cassidy, with contributions from Mary Ahern and design by Colin Moore, documents the club’s remarkable 130-year journey. Drawing on rare photographs, memorabilia and original records, the book offers more than a sporting history, it captures the club’s social and cultural significance across generations.

With roots in communities across Dolphins Barn, Kilmainham and Islandbridge, Donore’s impact has always extended beyond the track. As Irish athletics evolved, Donore remained a driving force, a place where athletes of all ages have found excellence, mentorship, and belonging.

Whether you’re a lifelong club runner, an Olympic hopeful, or simply passionate about Irish sport, The Story of Donore Harriers is a powerful reminder of what community sport can achieve and why its legacy matters.
