19-year-old Amy Greene storms to senior national 5k title

Amy Greene (Finn Valley AC) struck senior gold at this morning’s National 5k Championships held in conjunction with the Biofreeze Irish Runner 5k in the Phoenix Park, Dublin.

Over 1700 participants took part in the race, which was the first of three in the Biofreeze Athletics Ireland Race Series.

Greene, who is still a junior athlete, took the senior women’s gold in impressive fashion.

The 19-year-old DCU student who represented Ireland at the European Cross Country Championships in Brussels in December of last year continued her strong recent form, winning in a time of 16:43.

Hot on her heels was Hannah Steeds (Leevale AC) who won silver in 16:48, while steeplechase specialist Roisin O’Reilly (UCD AC) battled hard to win bronze, crossing the line in 16:54.

Wexford club DMP AC took senior women’s team honours with sisters Ciara and Katie Wilson, along with Clare Barrett, the three scoring members. Dunboyne AC claimed silver, with Clonliffe Harriers also making their way onto the podium, winning bronze.
