Sharlene Mawdsley disqualified from 400m after Athletics Ireland appeal rejected

After her heroics in qualifying for a global final, disappointingly Sharlene Mawdsley (Newport AC) has been disqualified from the Women’s 400m at the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow.

The track referee adjudicated that Mawdsley had broken Rule 17.1.3 ,which relates to obstruction, in the semi-final.

Athletics Ireland disagreed with this decision and thus launched a counter-appeal, insisting Mawdsley held her line until the athlete was passed, and moved in when there was space to do so.

Unfortunately, the Jury of Appeal has upheld the track referee’s decision.

Mawdsley returns to action along with the Women’s 4x400m Relay team on Sunday.
