Sinead Farrelly’s Comeback Leads Gotham FC To First-Ever NWSL Decider

Republic of Ireland midfielder Sinead Farrelly made a significant impact coming off the bench to help NY/NJ Gotham FC secure a thrilling victory over her former club, the Portland Thorns, during extra time.

This win propels Gotham to their first-ever National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) decider.

The pivotal moment occurred in the 107th minute when Kristie Mewis brilliantly found Katie Stengel on the edge of the box, who executed a superb finish into the top corner.

Farrelly’s journey is nothing short of remarkable. After an eight-year absence, she made a triumphant return to the game with Gotham in March this year. Her comeback story took an unexpected twist when she received a surprise call-up to Vera Pauw’s Ireland squad in April, leading to her participation in all three group games at the 2023 World Cup.

Notably, in 2021, Farrelly, along with Mana Shim, who now also plays for Gotham, made allegations against their former coach, Paul Riley, during their time with the Portland Thorns in 2015. Subsequent investigations revealed instances of widespread sexual abuse and misconduct within the NWSL.

Farrelly and Shim will now aim to help Gotham clinch their first NWSL crown as they face off against Megan Rapinoe’s OL Reign in Saturday’s final.

The Saturday showdown will take place at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego.
