Silver for Alison Bergin at U23 World Rowing Championships

Alison Bergin has won a silver medal for Ireland in the Single Sculls race at the U23 World Rowing Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

Bergin moved from fifth to third place in the first 1500m before sprinting the last quarter and gaining second; however, Switzerland’s Aurelia-Maxima Katharina Janzen ultimately held onto an early-established lead to come in first.

21-year-old Bergin, who was last year a recipient of the Paris Olympic Scholarship from the Olympic Federation of Ireland, will be delighted with improving her bronze of last year.

Bergin has been a member of Fermoy Rowing Club since she took up the sport in 2015.

She was a part of the Irish women’s four to come in fifth place in the U19 European Junior Championships in 2020, and last year was honoured with the “Outstanding Achievement of the Year Award” by Rowing Ireland after making her senior debut at the World Championships.
