Irish Women’s National Volleyball Squad Qualify For European Small Countries Championships

The Irish Women’s National Volleyball Squad has qualified for the European Small Countries Championships in Luxembourg from 26-28 May 2023.

A team of 14 players, 2 coaches and a physio will attend, where there will be two pools (yet to be confirmed) including teams from Iceland, Malta, Northern Ireland, Scotland and the hosts. The winners will become SCA champions and progress to the next round of the European Championships.

Although volleyball is still a minority sport in Ireland, it is the fifth most popular sport in the world. Today, over 10 000 people are involved in volleyball within Ireland, either playing through schools, clubs or being involved as coaches, officials and volunteers.

The Irish Women’s National Volleyball Squad was formed in March 2020, with many younger players stepping up to senior level in the past year since the last SCA competition in Iceland in 2022. Many players hail from Clare, Cork, Dublin, Galway, Kildare and further afield. Ten of the squad players are under the age of 22, showing the potential bright the future for Irish Women’s Volleyball.
The Irish Women’s National Volleyball Squad hopes to ‘create the foundation of an elite program that younger players can aspire to, and then continue to raise the level of’ in the near future.
The cost for the trip to Luxembourg is in the region of €10 000 with €7 000 being fundraised by the club themselves. In addition to each player securing a sponsor and the squad hosting a Pub Quiz on 12 May at Roddy Bolands, Rathmines (see entry details on @volleyballireland and Volleyball Ireland’s website) – the team is looking for additional fundraising support through a GoFundMe campaign to assist the team in getting to the championships.
