Rage Against Ref Leads To Strike

More than 50 local GAA fixtures for the weekend have been cancelled due to an anonymous handwritten letter being sent to a referee in Kilkenny, threatening him and his family.

The letter was sent to a referee in charge of an under-17 minor hurling game between Erins Own and Thomastown. The handwritten, anonymous letter, described lurid accusations around match decisions and accused the referee of siding with the home team. The letter went on to threaten the referee and wish him and his family harm.

The referees held a meeting in Langton last night and decided to withdraw their services from all hurling, camogie, Gaelic football and ladies football fixtures in Kilkenny this upcoming weekend.

Local gardaí are currently investigating the letter.
