McCabe Captains Arsenal’s Fight Against Wolfsberg In First Leg Of Women’s Champions League Semi-Final

Katie McCabe led Arsenal to an impressive comeback against Wolfsburg in the first leg of their semi-final on Sunday 23 April.

The result was all the more admirable in light of the Gunners injury crisis, with players Vivianne Miedema and Beth Mead sustaining anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture and captain Kim Little injuring her hamstring. Earlier this week, England skipper Leah Williamson also went down after rupturing her ACL.

Arsenal were quickly 2-0 down within the first 25 minutes, but the team fought hard to take a positive result home. Rafaelle Souza scored a goal just before half-time and Stina Blackstenius secured a second goal 20 minutes before the final whistle.

Wolfsburg pushed for a third goal but Arsenal held firm.

“We knew from last season this is a difficult place to come to,” Katie McCabe said post-match. “They have got fantastic support and they are a fantastic team so for us to have that resilience and show a gutsy performance to comeback and make it 2-2, I am really proud of that.”

The draw has made fans all the more eager for the return game on 1 May at the Emirates Stadium, with 50,000 tickets already sold for the game.

The winner of the semi-final will face either Chelsea or Barcelona in the final.
