AFLW Victory for Sinead Goldrick and Blaithin Mackin

This weekend Sinead Goldrick became the first person to hold both an All-Ireland ladies senior football and AFLW premiership title, as she helped the Melbourne Demons to their 19-15 victory over the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final on Sunday Nov. 27th.

Goldrick plays for Dublin, which won every year from 2017-2020, before Meath took the crown last year; this is her fourth season in the AFLW.

Goldrick shares the glory in Queensland with Demons teammate and Armagh player Blaithin Mackin, who is in her first season with the AFLW. Mackin’s goal in the second quarter of the final helped narrow the gap at a point when the Demons were behind 9 points. Goldrick and Mackin also both had five disposals and Mackin completed a tackle.

22 Irish players were involved in the AFLW this year. Four Irish players have now taken home the title: Mackin and Goldrick, Orla O’Dwyer last year with the Brisbane Lions, and Ailish Considine, who has won playing for Adelaide twice: in 2019 and earlier this year (the AFLW season was after moved to be played later in the year).
