‘I never wanted to have to choose between tennis and a family’ Serena Williams announces decision to retire

Serena Williams has announced her imminent retirement from tennis.

Winning 23 grand slam titles over a phenomenal 27-year career, the world will never forget Serena Williams. A tennis icon, Willaims not only dominated the women’s game but she has continued to be on the forefront of the international sporting landscape as a mother, icon, and leader.

After being knocked out in the first round at Wimbledon, having her childhood commemorated in the Oscar-winning film ‘King Richard’, and just winning her first match in over a year at the National Bank Open, it has indeed been a big year for the tennis superstar.

Williams told Vogue ‘I have never liked the word retirement. It doesn’t feel like a modern word to me’ but shares her intentions of having another child and her excitement about growing her family. Williams stated I need to be two feet into tennis or two feet outmaking the decision not to continue professional tennis due to her plans to have a second pregnancy. This is because suffered severe complications during the birth of Olympia, her first child, which may have been in the wake of her competing at a high level at the time.

However, she is still set on competing in this year’s US Open, so there is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for fans across the world to see such a historic player dominate the court in her final match.
